Wesley Chapel Methodist Church Celebrates 150th Anniversary

Wesley Chapel Methodist Church will celebrate its
150th anniversary with a homecoming service Sunday,
Sept. 24 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a covered dish lunch
in Kathwood Hall. Everyone is invited, including former
ministers and families associated with the church.

During the service, Jackie Bartley, longtime member,
church historian and president of the Beech Island
Historical Society, will give a history of the church.

Wesley Chapel was built after the Civil War when the
South was under Reconstruction. The church was founded by a Danish sea captain named Neils Hanson, who came to the U.S. before the Civil War and changed his name to William Watson and married a woman named Rosa from Baltimore, Md. Prior to the war and maybe during the war, he sailed his ship up and down the East Coast.

After the war, the Watsons moved to the area called Kathwood and bought 50 acres around the present church, organized the church and donated 9/10 of an acre of land for a church. He and his neighbors took up donations, and in 1873, they built a church on that land (in front of the present cemetery) and dedicated it in 1874. In 1950, due to the construction of the Savannah River Plant, church membership increased, and in 1953, the little church was moved nearby, enlarged, bricked, and rededicated on May 3, 1959.
